In 1988 the Soviet Union put on their first national beauty pageant and called it the Miss USSR Pageant.

Anyone who thought they were beautiful enough could enter the casting which took place in Gorky Park. The line to enter was more than 2 km long (about 1.25 miles).

The winner was Masha Kalinina, who came to the U.S. changed her name to Maria Kalinina and pursued an acting/modeling career.

She changed her name again, to Maria Kalin and today she owns and teaches at a yoga studio in Los Angeles.
